How the price is set
The Commission averages the closing prices of EU Emissions Trading System allowance auctions: over the calendar quarter for 2026 imports, over the week from 2027. Certificates for 2026 imports go on sale on 1 February 2027 on the central platform and are surrendered with the first annual declaration by 30 September 2027. From 2027, at each quarter-end a declarant must hold certificates covering at least 50% of the embedded emissions of goods imported so far that year.

Questions
Is the CBAM certificate price the same as the EU ETS price?
No. The Commission calculates it from the closing prices of EU ETS allowance auctions: a quarterly average for 2026 imports, a weekly average from 2027. It tracks the ETS price closely but is published as a separate official figure.
Which price applies to my import?
In 2026, the price for the calendar quarter in which the goods were imported, published in the first week after that quarter ends. From 2027, the weekly price. Certificates for 2026 imports go on sale on 1 February 2027 and must be surrendered by 30 September 2027.
